The AI factor is raising the stakes
Privacy conversations have also intensified because of artificial intelligence. Many companies are experimenting with tools that summarize documents, automate workflows, personalize experiences, or generate content using large datasets. Those efforts often raise old privacy questions in a more urgent form.
Was the data collected for this purpose? Does the company have the right to use it in model development or fine-tuning? Can personal information appear in outputs? How will sensitive data be handled if employees paste it into external systems? What happens when vendors improve their own models using customer prompts or usage logs?
These are not theoretical concerns. They affect vendor contracts, internal controls, product roadmaps, and customer communications. AI governance and privacy governance are increasingly intertwined, especially in sectors that handle health, financial, employment, education, or children’s data.
For business leaders, the lesson is straightforward: AI cannot be treated as a separate innovation track with privacy addressed afterward. If anything, new AI deployments make data discipline more urgent.
Privacy can be a competitive signal
Companies should be cautious about turning privacy into a marketing slogan. Overstated claims invite scrutiny and can backfire if operations do not match the message. But there is still a competitive benefit in being able to demonstrate restraint, clarity, and control.
In crowded markets, trust can influence buyer decisions, especially when products are otherwise similar. A company that explains its data practices plainly, limits collection, honors deletion requests efficiently, and gives customers meaningful control may stand out for the right reasons. This is particularly true in B2B environments where privacy reviews can stall procurement. Mature answers shorten friction.
That does not mean every privacy investment delivers immediate revenue. Some of it is defensive by nature. But the same is true of other governance disciplines that boards already understand well. The value lies in resilience, credibility, and the ability to grow without avoidable setbacks.

Senior leaders do not need to become privacy specialists, but they should be asking management questions that reveal whether the company is in control or merely reacting.

It touches trust, growth, product design, procurement, and governance all at once. Companies that still treat privacy as a narrow legal formality may find themselves exposed not only to enforcement, but also to slower sales, weaker customer loyalty, and strategic friction.
The organizations adapting best are not necessarily those with the loudest promises.
